How to Create Balance in a Room

Have you ever walked into a room or seen a room that you thought was absolutely stunning, but you can’t pinpoint what it is that you love about it? That is most likely because that room has balance, which means that everything in that room is perfectly selected and works together harmoniously. Today I’m going to share five important elements to consider in order to achieve balance in any space.

1) Scale and proportion

This is the balance between the furniture and décor and the room size, both in width and height. For example, if you have a large room that you want to make cozy and inviting, you’ll want to select larger scaled furniture. Or yet if you have a very large room, you might need to think about having multiple zones or conversational areas to bring a more of a comfortable and inviting feeling to the large space. If you have a small space, this doesn’t mean you’re looking for the smallest sized furniture - look for furniture that fits the space proportionately and that is functional for your everyday life.

2) Negative space

This is the space that isn’t used. It could be bare walls or empty space left by lower height furniture to give more of an open feel. The right amount of negative space will allow you to stay away from overcrowding or under furnishing. It also works to break things up and give your eyes rest and a sense of comfort.

3) Space flow

Each room has its own space flow, meaning the space that one uses to walk around and through a space. This goes hand in hand with the layout of furniture. Taking space flow into consideration is crucial when ordering new furniture and determining what size of furniture to order.  If you have too many pieces and create little room to enter and exit, for example, that will not only be dangerous but also uncomfortable in that you won’t feel a sense of ease and comfort being in that space.

4) Color and texture

Having the right amount of color and texture is what adds to warmth and comfort in a room. If you have the perfect scaled furniture, properly placed, but without any color or texture, you’ll feel that the space is still missing something. It might feel too sterile or uninteresting. Adding some color, whether that’s through greenery, textiles, wall paper, or playing with colorful art and decor is also great to add that layer of depth to a space.

5) Intrigue

We all love interesting rooms - rooms that tell a story, with pieces that are different and unique. This may take more time to achieve but is worth the hunt. Maybe you have family heirlooms or antique pieces passed down that you can look into adding into your space. Look for items that are different, that are conversational pieces, and pieces that best reflect you or the space itself. Unique art, objects, or books are great ideas, but you can really get very creative. Antiques, heritage and collector pieces, or even unique furniture can all create that next level awe in a room and allow it to stand out and have people talking.

So now that you know the key ingredients to creating balance in a room, try it out for yourself and let me know what you think! All it takes is some planning and preparation and you’ll be on your way to creating your perfectly designed room.

Until next time!
